Cache County Center for the National Children's Study
Purpose of Study
The purpose of The National Children’s Study (NCS) is to investigate the effects of environmental influences on the health, wellbeing, and development of children in the United States. This study will include more than 100,000 children from 105 distinct locations across the U.S. and follow them from before birth until the age of 21. Among the locations that will be included in the study are Cache County and Salt Lake County. The NCS will also provide a unique opportunity for researchers to network, collaborate, and develop a research community focused on the improvement of the health and wellbeing of children. Among the environmental influences that will be examined include biological, chemical, social, psychological, behavioral, and cultural factors. Additional information about NCS and associated research projects can be found at The National Childrens Study

Call for Proposals: The Cache County Center for the National Children's Study
and Utah State University Pilot Research Project Grant 2008
Purpose of Pilot Research Project Grants
The purpose of this RFP is to fund pilot research projects that will have the potential to broaden the Cache County component of the National Children’s Study (NCS). These pilot studies are expected to help pave the way for additional external funding (e.g., R01) by testing potential methodologies and developing instruments that may be used in adjunct studies to the NCS. Funding for these pilot studies will be provided through overhead return to Utah State University. As the NCS goes to the field next year, there will be a separate RFP generated through NICHD specifically focusing on full adjunct proposals. These proposals will be reviewed specifically within the context of the purpose for the National Children’s Study. These pilot research projects will aid in the preparation of adjunct studies. These adjunct studies have the potential to expand the usefulness of the NCS data sets. No additional studies will be funded through the NCS contract.
Investigator(s) will be responsible for identifying and securing participants for their pilot research projects, as enrollment for NCS in Cache County will not occur until January of 2010. Subjects in the pilot research projects will not be direct participants in the NCS. Additional information about the NCS and associated research projects can be found at www.nationalchildrensstudy.gov. Complimentary RO1 adjunct study proposals will have a two-tiered review process beyond the Utah State University review. One of these reviews will occur at the NCS national office. The second review is a peer review conducted through the federal funding agency.
Below are a few examples of pilot research projects that have been awarded grants in Salt Lake County at the University of Utah. Additional information about the Salt Lake County Children’s Study can be found at http://www.ped.med.utah.edu/ncs/.
